Flames Burn Stars In OT

When it comes to playing overtime, nobody does it better than the Calgary Flames.

Jason Wiemer scored 2:03 into overtime Wednesday night, giving the Flames a 2-1 win their NHL-record eighth this season in the extra session.

Martin St. Louis fought off both Dallas defenseman behind the Dallas net to get the puck to Wiemer, who beat Manny Fernandez high.

Calgary improved to 8-1-5 in overtime. The previous record of seven overtime victories was accomplished three times: the 1995-96 New Jersey Devils, 1996-97 Detroit Red Wings and 1998-99 Pittsburgh Penguins.

Seven players have overtime goals for the Flames. Only injured Cory Stillman has scored twice.

"We've just been outstanding in overtime this year and its been a big confidence booster for us," Wiemer said. "We feel that going into overtime against any team, we've got a great chance to win."

Dallas lost captain Mike Modano with a slight concussion when Wiemer drove him hard into the boards with 9:09 left. Modano had to be helped off the ice and did not return.

Bill Lindsay also scored for the Flames, 10-1-1 in their last 12 home games.

The loss spoiled an outstanding game by Fernandez, who finished with 39 saves.

"Sure the new overtime rule allowed us to get one point out of this, but nobody in tis room is happy with the result," said Fernandez, who had a five-game winning streak end and lost for the first time since Nov. 10th. "We'll take it but we all know we have to play a little bit harder, me included."

For the second straight game, the Stars were outshot badly with Calgary holding a 41-22 edge. Dallas was outshot 39-16 at Edmonton on Tuesday in a 3-2 win over the Oilers.

Blake Sloan tied the game 1-1, at 9:22 of the third, with his first goal in 16 games.

Lindsay gave the Flames a 1-0 lead 1:02 into the third with his first goal in 23 games. The play was set up when Calgary defenseman Denis Gauthier took out Modano in the Calgary end, forcing a turnover.

St. Louis picked up the loose puck and carried it into the Dallas zone before dropping it off to Lindsay, who beat Fernandez on the blocker side with a slap shot.

Brathwaite has a 0.66 goals-against average against Dallas in five career appearances.

The Stars got some good news on the injury front when Joe Nieuwendyk returned after missing the previous 10 games with cartilage damage in his ribs.
