(CBS/WFOR) - Miami-Dade Police and two families are searching for a teen couple police describe as a "modern day Romeo and Juliet."  Seventeen-year-old Nicole Dones has been missing since April 18 and is believed to be with her 18-year-old boyfriend Jackson Wayne Powell, who is also missing.

"We were trying to keep her away from him," Nicole's father Angel Dones told The Miami Herald.

According to the paper, Jackson's father Wayne Powell had been trying to get his son to "back off a little bit," as his son's performance at school had suffered, because of how much energy he was investing in the relationship.

The paper reports that the teens had previously been caught skipping school together.

Nicole left her home before dawn, police said, carrying a few bags with personal belongings.

Detectives told the Miami Herald that they do not think the teens are in danger, but both families are very concerned given the amount of time the teens have been missing.

The parents of the teens have hired a private investigator and are offering a $5,000 reward.

Police say Nicole is about 5-feet-5-inches tall and weighs 120 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. Jackson Powell is described as 5-feet-11-inches tall and weighing 155 pounds, with light brown hair and blue eyes.

Anyone with information is asked to call private investigator David Gonzalez at 305-338-3100 and Miami-Dade Police at 305-418-7201 or 305-476-5423.
