First Hand Accounts of the "Day of Departure" in Egypt
CBS News radio correspondent Vicki Barker joined CBS News justice correspondent Bob Orr in a phone interview from Cairo's Tahrir Liberation Square to talk about the current situation in the area. Barker reported seeing "thousands upon thousands upon thousands of chanting, cheering, clapping people -- calling on Hosni Mubarak to step down."
Barker said the sentiment among protesters had transformed, remarking that individuals have been drawn to the streets in order to resist what Egyptians have called "state-sponsored violence."
She also talked about what it was like to be a journalist covering the crisis. Watch the full interview above.
Also, CBS News correspondent Liz Palmer filed this report below of what she is seeing in the square. Palmer, also reporting from Tahrir Square, mentioned that protesters got a "passive endorsement from the army." She also added, "the soldiers have set up proper barricades at each of the entrances into the square and the people flowing in are being checked." It seems that while military presence is a foot, they are not intervening unless absolutely necessary."
