Finishing School For Terrorists

Dug into the mountains of Afghanistan is a rugged camp known as Terror U., a campus for terrorists endowed by Osama bin Laden, reports CBS News National Security Correspondent David Martin.

Bin Laden was at the camp last August when the U.S. hit it with about $50 million worth of cruise missiles in retaliation for the truck bombings of two American embassies in Africa.

Satellite photos seen now for the first time show the missiles caused extensive damage. One target was a row of villas where bin Laden was believed to be meeting with his top lieutenants. Two villas were destroyed, killing at least one of his commanders, but the missiles fell short of the others and bin Laden escaped with his life.

"If you didn't get Osama bin Laden on the casualty list, you got nothing," says former CIA officer Milt Bearden. "You lose."

Bearden frequented Terror U. in the 1980s when it was 'Freedom Fighter U.' and the CIA was helping Afghan guerillas fight off the Soviet army. He says knocking down buildings -- the so-called infrastructure -- doesn't count for much.

"I do not think there is an infrastructure there that matters in this battle," says Bearden. "Osama bin Laden's infrastructure is his bank account and his ability to convince people to follow him."

The camp no longer exists. What the cruise missiles didn't destroy has since been dismantled and carted away, but Bearden says Terror U. is still out there.

"Terror U. is a frame of mind and it can be in any place," Bearden says.

It's also dirt-cheap. Bin Laden may be a multi-millionaire, but U.S. officials estimate the attack which killed more than 250 people in Nairobi cost only $10,000.
