Fatal shooting between two New York City schools, three in custody
NEW YORK -- Three people are in custody after a 20-year-old woman was shot and killed just steps from two Bronx schools on Thursday.
Police said they do not believe the victim, Kimberly Velasquez, was the intended target of the gunfire.
According to CBS New York, the shooting occurred around 3 p.m. in the courtyard of a public housing development that is sandwiched between a high school and an elementary school. Many parents use the pathway through the housing project to get between the two schools, the station reports.
Residents said the area is relatively safe and told a reporter they were shaken.
"I was asking the cops what happened, because I live here, and you know, my kids walk in and out. I walk in and out. I want to know what happened. It's very upsetting to be honest with you - very upsetting," one woman said.
Witnesses reported hearing four or five shots, and two men and a woman were seen speeding off in a marked panel truck .
Police said charges in the case are pending.
