(CBS/AP) DALLAS - A man suspected of fatally shooting a pregnant woman is holed up in a house in North Dallas after a frantic police car chase through a residential neighborhood.

Police Senior Cpl. Sherri Jeffrey says the woman was shot at a house in Hamilton Park Monday morning.

Jeffrey declined to provide details of the woman's condition or her relationship to the suspect. She said a nearby school was put on lockdown.

Television footage showed the man driving a silver car at high speed through a residential neighborhood. Bystanders scattered as the car flew past. It ground to an abrupt halt as it hit a curb, the bumper flying off. The driver took off on foot to a nearby house.

The shooting suspect was reportedly in a romantic relationship with the female victim, who is believed to be pregnant, CBS DFW reports.

According to the station, the woman and her unborn child did not survive the shooting. The woman was transported to Baylor Medical Center and was reportedly pronounced dead there.

The 26-year-old male shooting suspect and an officer with the Dallas Police Department were both hit by gunfire during the police chase, according to the station.

While the extent of the suspect's injuries are unknown, the police officer was reportedly wearing a bulletproof vest and is expected to be fine.

Police have surrounded the house where the suspect is holed up. It is not known who the house belongs to or if anyone other than the suspect is inside, the station reports.
