Famous Faces

Physiognomy is the art of judging human character from facial features.

It's also the title of a new book by Mark Seliger, head photographer for Rolling Stone magazine, reports CBS News This Morning Co-Anchor Mark McEwen.

"It's a process when I'm working. I'm not really sure where I'm going with things until I'm there," says Seliger.

He says his photo sessions are collaborative efforts between photographer and subject.

Seliger photographed Jerry Seinfeld for a feature on the cover of the magazine, and he poses as the Tin Man from the The Wizard of Oz.

"The great thing about this concept is that Jerry came to us at Rolling Stone and asked if I would do it," he says.

"He represents this decade for a lot of reasons; he just seems like the perfect candidate to slap on the cover of the book," he adds.

As for his photo shoot with Tom Hanks, Seliger recalls it was hilarious.

Tom Hanks hams it up.
"The trainer kind of directed the chimp's hands, and Tom reacted to what the monkey was doing. It was just hysterical. I had to stop taking pictures just to laugh," Seliger recalls.

One of the most complicated pictures he worked on was Drew Barrymore as a boxer, he says. "It was rewarding and it was charming."

He also worked with Courtney Love. "She's extremely giving and hard working," he adds.

But shooting Curtis Mayfield was quite a unique experience for Seliger.

"Curtis had been injured in an accident; he was obviously in pain and very compromised, yet his spirit was just incredible. He was open. He was warm," he recalls.

"To walk into that situation and to take that kind of photograph made me feel like I had changed. Like I had a chance to expand the way I was feeling emotionally," he notes.
