Family searches for missing New York man in Mexico

NEW YORK – A New York man has gone missing during a marathon motorcycle ride through Mexico, reports CBS New York. Harry Devert, 32, a world traveler and adventure blogger from Westchester, hasn’t been heard from for weeks, according to girlfriend Sarah Schiear. She last received a text message from her boyfriend on Jan. 25.

“I know that because of how often we were talking that he would have reached out if he was able to,” Schiear said. “I can’t even wrap my brain around what is happening.”

“Just got an hour-and-a-half military escort out of some area,” read the last message Devert sent to Shiear. “It was too dangerous for me to be. Stopping for lunch and voila internet.”

“I love my son and I don’t need him next to me but I need to know he’s alive in the world and that he’s okay,” said Ann Devert, Harry’s mother. She has been trying to set up a search for her son in Mexico but has encountered difficulties due to the distance.

“I’m hoping for anyone who has a connection in Mexico to that area to tell people to be on the lookout for my son. My beloved, beloved son,” she said.

The family received a message written in Spanish on Facebook Saturday which claimed to know where Devert was. A phone number contained in the message traced back to a volatile region in Mexico. The family was unable to get anyone to answer their calls.

“I really don’t believe that he’s sitting on a beach somewhere,” Schiear said. “I wish he was.”

Ann Devert said she has been in touch with the U.S. Embassy in Mexico. She said that, at one point, someone was misidentified as Harry.

“I need help from the U.S. government to pressure the Mexican government to have the federal forces looking for him,” she said.

Friends are attempting to arrange a motorcycle crew to travel down to Mexico and look for Devert.
