Facebook hires hacker George "Geohot" Hotz
(CBS) - George "Geohot" Hotz, famous for his iPhone hacking skills and for reverse-engineering Sony's PlayStation 3, is officially working at Facebook, CNET reports.
When TechUnwrapped first reported rumors that the 21-year-old took on a position at the giant social network based in Palo Alto, Calif., some Facebook users paused and wondered if their information just landed in the wrong hands.
Facebook confirmed the new hire. As it turns out, Hotz has been working at Facebook as a software engineer since May, just one month after Sony announced a settlement with the hacker.
Naturally, he announced his employment on his Facebook page - viewable only to Facebook friends - on June 22, saying that "Facebook is really an amazing place to work...first hackathon over."
Facebook has yet to reveal what Hotz's role is in the company, but many speculate he's involved with mobile efforts.
With Hotz's new gig revealed, tech nuts on Twitter who are following the story respond:
"Crime does pay..." -gwallstar1
"If you can't beat them, offer them a job..." -DylanRaynes
"Proves you'll always have a job, if you're good at what you do!" -Nedata
Thoughts? Are you relieved Hotz is using his hacking powers for good?
