Esteban Smith shooting update: Wife found dead in North Carolina

(CBS/AP) JACKSONVILLE, N.C. -The wife of Esteban Smith, the 23-year-old marine from North Carolina suspected of shooting six people in West Texas on Sunday, has been found dead.

Authorities said they found Smith's wife, Rubi Estefania Smith, a 21-year-old from Bakersfield, Calif., in a motel room near Camp Lejeune on Sunday afternoon. A police spokeswoman said it appears Rubi Smith died from a knife wound.

Esteban Smith, who had been on active duty at Camp Lejeune, is suspected of killing her. Police also believe he was the gunman in West Texas who fatally shot one woman and injured 5 more in a shooting rampage that began at 4:30 a.m. Sunday morning.

According to police, they recovered an assault rifle, a handgun and hundreds of rounds of ammunition from Esteban Smith's car after the shootings.

He was killed in a gun battle with police.
