While House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has heard remarkably little dissent from the environmental community for her decision to allow a vote on expanded offshore oil drilling, at least one green organization is calling her out on it.
“The energy bill discussed in the House today falls far short of what this country needs, and its inclusion of offshore drilling actually moves us in the wrong direction,” said Brent Blackwelder, president of Friends of the Earth.
“Debate on this bill has been a waste of energy and a waste of time. We strongly oppose this bill.”
The House is set to vote Tuesday evening on an energy bill that includes an expansion of drilling off the coast of several states.
However upset Blackwelder was with Pelosi, it was nothing compared to how he felt about congressional Republicans, who have been pushing a more aggressive expansion of drilling.
“The behavior of the House GOP has been especially repugnant,” he said. “What we saw today is that the Republican leadership has flat-out lied by claiming it supports an ‘all of the above’ energy policy. In fact, Republicans reaffirmed that they support only drilling and Big Oil and continue to oppose real solutions to our nation’s energy challenges.”
