Emotions Of Farm Animals

In the 1995 surprise hit "Babe," Hollywood was delighted to see how much people could love a singing pig.

Best-selling author and animal lover Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson found a real live singing pig not far from his New Zealand home.

He explores what makes her sing as well as the emotional lives of pigs, cows, sheep and all sorts of farm animals in his latest book, "The Pig Who Sang to the Moon: The Emotional World of Farm Animals."

Masson had previously written "Dogs Never Lie About Love," which examined the emotional lives of dogs; "The Nine Emotional Lives of Cats," and "When Elephants Weep," which observed the emotional lives of wild animals.

The author says he didn't have any personal attachments to farm animals before writing "The Pig Who Sang to the Moon," because he wasn't sure if they experience emotions. Masson concluded that the animals did feel emotions. In his book, Masson examines the animals' emotions such as affection, forgiveness and happiness.

The author devotes a chapter each to pigs, chickens, sheep and goats, cows and ducks. Masson mixes anecdotal stories with quotes from scientists, other authors' observations and philosophical musings on the nature of each species.
