Elizabeth Edwards Works The Phones

(CBS)
From CBS News' Aaron Lewis

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Elizabeth Edwards dropped by the field office in Iowa City this afternoon and made some last minute phone calls to mobilize support for her husband at tonight's caucuses.

She spoke with one woman named Barbara and used a sympathetic tone to start the call.

"Pretty tired of tape recordings are you?" she asked. "Well if it's any consolation, I'm pretty tired of making them, too. It's nice to be talking to a real human being."

Mrs. Edwards then launched into the hard sell on behalf of the former senator.

"We wouldn't be doing this if I didn't think he was the single candidate best positioned to affect the change that everybody talks about," she said.

And after making the pitch and offering Barbara a ride to the caucus, she politely got down to the bottom line.

"I know that the staff people really are not shy about asking you who you are supporting," she said humbly. "I don't know why I'm shy about asking who you're supporting."

And after several seconds of silence, we heard Elizabeth jump in...

"Well since since you can't vote for all three and you can only vote for one..."

That's right: our mysterious Barbara is still undecided among THREE Democratic candidates on caucus day (Which three? Elizabeth declined to say).

Only in Iowa....

"Don't you love it?" Mrs. Edwards asked no one in particular after hanging up the phone.
