Edit Google Docs on Your iPhone, iPad, or Android Phone

Need to edit a document while on a train, on a plane, or in a taxi stuck in midtown traffic? The new mobile version of the Google Docs viewer lets you do exactly that, provided you've got an Android phone, iPhone, or iPad. (Oh, and an Internet connection.)

Basically, when you access Google Docs in your mobile browser (by visiting docs.google.com), you can open and edit any text document or spreadsheet in your documents list -- no need to download it first.

Want to see it in action? Take a look:

Just don't expect Word-caliber editing capabilities. You can't create a new document, change a document's font size or style, add links or images, or format the text in any way. Basically, it's rudimentary text editing.

I'm a glass-half-full kind of guy, so I think it's better than nothing -- and how much heavy writing or formatting would you want to do on a smartphone, anyway? On the other hand, iPad users will no doubt yearn for more editing features.

They'll roll out in due time, I'm sure. For now, you're no longer limited to viewing your Google Docs docs on the run; now you can edit them as well.
