Ecology galas have Hollywood turning green

(CBS) Green was on the minds of a lot of Hollywood stars this week, and it wasn't just thoughts of Ryan Reynolds' new movie.

Reynolds, whose "The Green Lantern" film debuts this summer, wasn't among them, but dozens of stars turned out for two big benefits to aid the environment.

Global Green, the U.S. arm of the environmental organization former Russian President Mikhail S. Gorbachev put together in 1993, honored actor Mark Ruffalo at its 15th annual Millennium Awards, and the fashion house Chanel teamed up with the Natural Resources Defense Council's Ocean Initiative to raise $2.66 million at a star-studded Malibu beach party.

Ruffalo, who has led a fight to ban hydrofracking - using chemicals and water to extract natural gas from rocks - was given Global Green's Entertainment Industry Environmental Leadership Award at a Saturday night dinner.

Among those on hand to celebrate were Ed Begley Jr., Kyra Sedgwick and hubby Kevin Bacon, Orlando Bloom and wife Miranda Kerr, Ed O'Neil, Laura Dern, Michelle Rodriguez and Jamie Lee Curtis and husband Christopher Guest.

Chanel's J12 line of watches was the sponsor of the Saturday night fundraiser for NRDC, which is trying to protect the world's oceans, at the Malibu home of Ron and Kelly Meyer. The event featured cocktails, a vegetarian dinner and live music including performance by Jason Mraz and the "Crazy Heart" duo of actor Jeff Bridges and T Bone Burnett.

Among the nearly 200 guests in attendance were Barbra Streisand and hubby James Brolin, Brian Grazer, Owen Wilson, a very pregnant Kate Hudson, Laird Hamilton, Gabrielle Reece, Kenn G. Diane Lane, Monique Lhuillier, Chris O'Donnell, Don Johnson, Drew Barrymore, Herb Alpert, Roman Downey Camilla Alves, Courteney Cox, Bryce Dallas Howard, Ali Larter and Rachel Zoe
