Drake scores top honor at Woodie Awards during SXSW

Drake won top honors at MTV's annual South By Southwest-based awards show Thursday night.

The Canadian rapper-singer-actor won Woodie of the Year, given to music's top emerging artist, during the Woodie Awards in Austin.

Lil Wayne, who founded Drake's label Young Money, shocked the crowd when he officially kicked off the show and dropped a verse from his own 2008 smash "A Milli." He later accepted Drake's award for him.

The 1975 took the breaking Woodie for best new artist. Chance the Rapper got best video Woodie for "Everybody's Something" and Ed Sheeran earned the performing Woodie.

"I played the Woodies back in 2012 and saw everyone win an award and was quite jealous, so it's actually nice to win one," said Sheeran. "Thanks to the fans for voting and thank to you to mtvU for creating the award and for giving it to me."

Other winners included Beyonce, lauded for her guerrilla album release last December, and A$AP Rocky and Skrillex who won for their collaboration "Wild For the Night."

The awards show was taped Thursday night with The 1975, Childish Gambino, Charli XCX and Iggy Azalea performing and will air at 8 p.m. EDT Sunday on MTV.
