Dozens sickened by chemical fumes in L.A. County

CARSON, Calif.

A sulfuric acid spill at a chemical company sickened 50 to 60 people in at least one and perhaps more businesses in Carson, Calif. Monday night, authorities said.

CBS Los Angeles station KCBS-TV reports workers from Brookville Industries complained of burning noses and throats, as Los Angeles County fire officials reported acid had spilled at a chemical company called Solvay.

Los Angeles County's Sheriff's Lt. April Tardy says 50-60 workers in all were treated for those symptoms as well as difficulty in breathing, nausea, and coughing. Ten were brought to hospitals but, she says, all were "fine."

Ambulances were on the scene. Workers were treated at curbside.
