Doctors: Carson Will Be OK

Doctors expect a complete recovery for Johnny Carson, reports CBS This Morning. The former host of The Tonight Show underwent a quadruple bypass operation last Friday, and he will be released from the hospital in a few days.

Carson, 73, had the surgery at St. John's Hospital and Health Center in Santa Monica, Calif., to treat coronary artery disease.

Daily Variety gossip columnist Army Archerd said in the paper's Thursday issue that Carson was "up and about" in his hospital room.

Carson, who has rarely been seen in public since handing over the Tonight Show reins to Jay Leno in 1992, had instructed that only a few people were to be notified of his operation and only after he was deemed all right, Archerd noted.

Carson was a late-night TV institution for 30 years until his retirement. His NBC show was watched nightly by about 12 million.

Archerd said Carson, who lives in Malibu with his wife, Alex, rarely leaves his neighborhood, has cut down on his tennis and discontinued his annual treks to Africa, the French Riviera and the Wimbledon tennis tournament.
