Did Gisele Bundchen tirade violate team 'code'?
Supermodel and wife of Tom Brady, Gisele Buncheden, voiced her frustrations moments following the New England Patriots' loss in the Super Bowl, setting off a firestorm of criticism over her critical words about her husband's teammates.
Filing out of the stadium on Sunday, Bundchen was heckled by a New York Giants fan who said, "Eli Manning owns your husband."
Bunchen fired back, defending Brady. "You are supposed to catch the ball when you're supposed to catch the ball," she said. "My husband cannot...throw the ball and catch the ball at the same time."
In defeat, athletes' spouses are expected to keep a low profile, but when the Bundchen video went viral, celebrity website TMZ reported that some patriots claimed Gisele violated an unwritten code of silence, that her comments were, "...like knocking someone when they are down."
Best-selling sports author Ross Bernstein says there has always been an expectation of silent support for teammates. "If the player breaks these codes he becomes like a cancer," Bernstein said. "He's not going to be long for the team because he's going to disrupt the chemistry of the locker room."
"Gisele's comments were personal, heat-of-the-moment," Bernstein said. He suggests the couple "own" the controversy, saying, "If you own it, it goes away," he said. "If you don't, it becomes an issue, and we keep talking about it."
