"Dexter" returns for sixth season
(CBS) Dexter Morgan is back, and this season everyone's favorite serial killer is grappling with thoughts of a spiritual nature.
"Dexter" kicked off its sixth season on Sunday night with "Those Kinds of Things." (Warning: Spoilers ahead.)
Dexter Morgan's son Harrison is now almost old enough to be starting school, and a visit to a Catholic preschool gets dad thinking about God and religion. He doesn't believe in anything (except, of course, his "code"), but what does he want Harrison to believe?
Dexter also heads to his high school reunion, but not to catch up with old friends - he suspects the former class jock of murdering his wife, another former classmate. When he notices the jock wearing a crucifix and sporting a Jesus tattoo, Dexter debates theology with him before killing him.
We're also introduced to this season's main bad guys, played by Edward James Olmos and Colin Hanks. The duo capture a pregnant snake, then murder a fruit stand worker and sew seven baby snakes inside his abdomen.
Meanwhile, Angel and LaGuerta are now divorced, and they're totally fine with it. She's blackmailed her way into a promotion to captain, and he's taking over her lieutenant position. Angel's very observant younger sister is now Harrison's nanny. Masuka is passing his wisdom onto the next generation by teaching forensic pathology at a local college, and Debra and Quinn are still dating and living together.
Quinn's plan to propose to Debra was foiled when a gunman bursts into the bar they're at and starts shooting, and they take him down together.
Overall, it looks like "Dexter" is back in top form, after a previous season that some complained was less than stellar. The best moment: Dexter, at his high school reunion, muses in a voiceover: "I have no idea what Hammer Time is, or how it differs from regular time."
