Destroy Confidential Data with Freeraser
Agent 004, issuing a field report to MI-6: Attempting to track down the Baron and his stolen diamonds, I've discovered his lair. It's an innocent-looking warehouse in Denver where he apparently intends to build his weather control machine and hold the free world hostage. I sit at his computer and bypass security (his password was Evi1 Overl0rd) and -- Blimey wickets!!! -- I find that he has thoroughly erased his documents with Freeraser.
Q will want to know about this. Freeraser is a free utility that can erase documents to Department of Defense standards. Actually, you can specify any of three levels of destructiveness, from a fast and cursory erase (one-round filling of random data) to the intermediate DoD spec (three-round filling) to the ultimate 35-round filling. Not even the NSA will get more than a few stray bits after being erased on that final setting.
Even better, Freeraser is easily accessed from the desktop: Just drag and drop files into the Freeraser trash bin. Because the data is utterly irretrievable, Freeraser warns you clearly before it starts scrambling bits. If you ever put corporate confidential information on your personal PC (you don't really do that, do you?), Freeraser should be on your PC.
As for the safety of the free world, get used to snow in July. Thanks to Freeraser, the Baron's trail has gone, err, cold. [Via Lifehacker]
