Depp Stars In 'Pirates' Game

Actor Johnny Depp lends his voice to Bethesda Softwork's new video game "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Legend of Jack Sparrow," slated for release this week.

The game, designed for use on PlayStation 2 and PC platforms, features digitized versions of Depp's tipsy swashbuckler Jack Sparrow, Orlando Bloom's Will Turner and Keira Knightley's Elizabeth Swann, who fight and elude enemies in burning buildings, caves and shipwrecks.

The fast-paced adventure game was designed by LA-based 7 Studios. Depp recorded three to four hours of sound for the game at a studio in Los Angeles last March.

"We are thrilled to have Johnny Depp working on this project," Todd Vaughn, executive producer of the game said in a statement. "We couldn't imagine a better way to capture the spirit of the character than to have Depp lend his voice to Captain Jack Sparrow. It truly adds to an already rich gameplay experience."

Depp has said in interviews that Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards and cartoon character Pepe LePew inspired his gold-toothed Sparrow character. Richards reportedly will have a cameo in the third "Pirates" installment, which is scheduled for release in 2007.

"Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest," the second installment of the franchise, debuts in theaters on July 7. Depp, who resides in France, received a best actor Oscar nod for his work in "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" in 2004.
