Denver Cop Shooting: Rollen Oliver arrested in fatal shooting of officer Celena Hollis, police say

(CBS/AP) DENVER - Police said Monday they have arrested 21-year-old Rollen Oliver for investigation of first-degree murder in the shooting death of Celena Hollis. She has been identified as the Denver policewoman and single mother who was shot and killed during a public jazz festival.

Oliver was taken into custody late Sunday after witnesses gave a description of the gunman. Police also recovered a gun and said they believe Oliver was the only person involved in the attack.

The shooting suspect appeared in court Monday and was ordered held without bond. District Attorney's spokeswoman Lynn Kimbrough said a decision on charges was not expected until later this week.

Police Chief Robert White said investigators were not sure if Hollis was the target of the shooting on Sunday when she answered a call about a disturbance in City Park. This is where the city holds free concerts during the summer months for families and young children.

Authorities said they did not know the cause of gunfire that erupted in the middle of the jazz concert which sent waves of people running through park grounds.

Hollis, 32, was a Detroit police officer before she joined the Denver Police Department in 2005. She also served as president of the Denver Police Department Black Police Officers Organization.

Denver police Sgt. J.D. Unser said Hollis' parents and sister live in Denver, and Hollis was happy to come to the city, which she considered safer than Detroit. Hollis was a single mother who was raising her 12-year-old daughter alone.

At least three shots were fired Sunday shortly after a jazz band finished playing on a lakeside pavilion stage. Hollis was in uniform and off-duty when she was shot in the head and later died at a hospital.

"There was a tragic event last night and a beautiful young, single mother and a valuable member of the Denver Police Department lost her life," Public Safety Manager Alex Martinez said Monday.
