Deion And The Donald
As one of the country's most well-known and most successful real estate developers, Donald Trump has poured a lot of concrete and steel into several American cities.
It has earned him a reputation that often precedes him, not unlike that of Deion Sanders who recently visited with the billionaire developer.
Whether walking through the streets of New York or along Atlantic City's boardwalk, the Trump name is everywhere.
There is no question that Trump has re-defined real estate investment.
"That's right. I don't play games," Trump tells Sanders.
So what's the biggest misconception of Donald Trump?
"Well, I think I'm a much nicer person than most think," says Trump. "There are a lot of people out there that are pretty active in hating me. But no, I'm a much nicer person. I really think I get along great with people."
What is he most proud of?
"Well always it's got to be family, and it should always be family. And, of course I have to say that because it's politically correct."
"Is that correct?" asks Trump tongue in cheek. "So I have to start with that. But you know I'm very proud of the great buildings I've built over in Manhattan."
"And they've made me a star. I mean to a certain extent, my buildings have made me a star. So you had to do it a little harder," he continues.
But Donald Trump had taken his share of fiscal bruises on his way to the top. The early '90s left the billionaire, billions of dollars in debt. Yet when asked what he'd do over again, it was troubled marriages that Donald Trump felt most passionate about. He's had two that have ended in divorce.
What would he do differently?
"Well I'm not sure. It's not easy," he says.
"Your wife, my wife, because they are competing against what you and I do," he tells Sanders. "And that's tough competition."
"They have to be secure. You need really - I never even thought of that. They need to be secure. And you know because basically we're insecure, so they have to be very secure."
As for financial advice…
"Well I don't like the market, I never liked the market. And sometimes I'm wrong and sometimes I'm right. And I guess over the last couple of years, I've been right. I think if you're in the market now, stay there because I think it's going to come back. But I love real estate as an investment for people. It solves a lot of-if they buy a house or an apartment, they have brick and mortar…not like I own some stock. Some Global Crossing or a this or that stock that got clobbered."
Back on Park Avenue, Trump tried to sell Sanders on his newest luxury apartment building.
" This is going to be a really luxury job- 59th and Park Ave," he said. "Nice pipe, all copper tubing. The best."
Sanders went to the sales office, but didn't stay long enough to get any quotes. Let's just say this apartment building is for a very discriminating buyer with really deep pockets. That's the kind of consumer that has been a staple for Trump's success.
