Dean Smith

This is Dean Smith's first year as a studio analyst for CBS Sports' coverage of the NCAA Men's Basketball Championship.

Smith coached the University of North Carolina basketball team for 36 years (1961-97), then retired following the 1996-97 season as the all-time winningest coach in basketball history, surpassing Adolph Rupp (876, Kentucky) with 879 victories. Smith coached UNC to two national titles (1982, 1993), 11 Final Four appearances and 13 Atlantic Coast Conference Championships.

Under Smith, the Tar Heels won at least 20 games for 27 straight years and 30 of past 31. A 28-7 record in the final season also gave Smith an NCAA-record 22nd season with at least 25 wins.

He was voted ACC Coach of the Year nine times (1967, '68, '69, '71, '76, '77, '79, '88 and '93). More than 96 percent of Smith's lettermen graduated since his first year in 1961.

Smith graduated from Kansas University where he played varsity basketball and baseball. He was a member of the Kansas basketball team that won 1952 NCAA title and finished second in 1953.

Inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass. in 1983 and into the North Carolina Hall of Fame in 1981, Smith led the U.S.A basketball team to a 1976 Gold Medal at the Summer Olympics in Montreal.

Smith was born Feb. 28, 1931 in Emporia, Kan. He currently resides in Chapel Hill, N.C., with his wife. They have five children.
