OCEANSIDE, Calif. -- Police are investigating the death of a toddler found Wednesday in a Southern California residence where his mother was discovered unconscious, CBS affiliate KFMB reports.

Oceanside police say the one-year-old boy's grandmother called 911 after she finding the child and his mother.

When police and emergency crews arrived, they immediately gave the 22-month-old CPR. It was unsuccessful and he was declared dead at the scene.

His 28-year-old mother was found unconscious in a different room. She was taken to Tri-City Medical Center for treatment and is expected to survive.

Officers say there was no sign of a break-in and they are investigating the death as a homicide.

"There was no forced entry," Lt. George Durrah with Oceanside Police said.

Neighbors in the area reported hearing shrill screams during the incident. One neighbor, Dionne Elliott, said she doesn't think the mother would harm her son.

"Every time I saw her with her baby they were smiling. At first we heard it was the flu. I don't know if they're saying she neglected her baby. It's a sad situation," Elliott said.
