Former model Dayle Haddon has applied her years of experience to a book called Ageless Beauty, with insights on health, beauty and well-being for women of all ages. Dayle shares her beauty secrets and golden rules on getting some much needed rest.
About 70 million Americans suffer from sleep deprivation. Due to hectic schedules, most of us simply do not get the sleep we need.
Want to feel renewed? Follow Dayle's rules for great sleep.
- Don't eat too late. Cut-off for the evening meal is 9pm, though 8pm is preferable and 7:30pm is best of all.
- Become a fresh air friend. Stuffy rooms are not conducive to sleep because oxygen level is lower. Try to keep a window open.
- Enter the aroma zone. Lavender essential oil is a tried and tested sleep aid. Try a few drops on your pillow. Also, try, Neroli, sandalwood and geranium.
- Tune in to white noise. If you live in a big city, try a sound machine for a variety of background sounds that work to drown out other noises that can keep you up at night.
- Bath-To-Bed. According to sleep experts, the warming affect of a bath on the brain improves deep, slow-wave sleep.
- Yoga. Exercise limbers you and gets the energy flowing for the day. Also, calms you and prepares you for a perfect nights rest.
- Catnap. Try to nap whenever you have five minutes of downtime. It's a lot like mini-meditation since you're not really asleep, but just semiconscious. All the same, it's extremely restorative and rests your eyes and mind.
- No TV. Keep the set out of the bedroom. It's too addictive and instead of helping to unwind actually disturbs sleep patterns. Experts say that reading a newpaper or paying bills can have the same effect.
- Drink your milk. A little hot milk and honey always seems to do the trick. Try to avoid caffeine after 4pm. Also, keep a glass of water by your bed so you don't interrupt your sleep in case you wake up thirsty.
- Dress for bed. Make sure your bed and pillows are comfortable and inviting. Use an eye pillow, the weight helps your eyelids from flickering. Also, buy yourself some fabulous nightwear. Indulge in silk satin pajamas. Pale colors are known to be more restful.
The Morning After
There are days that we haven't gotten enough sleep. Jet lag is a real culprit, and most of need to know what to do to look our best. When all else fails, try these tricks of the trade:
- Cold Water Splashes. It's also a great pick-me-up and help calm the skin. So is a glass of water. For the eyes store wet chamomile tea bags in plastic baggies in the frig the night before, or use a number of EYE PACKS to help reduce puffiness around the eye area. Cold cucumbers can also plump up the eye area with moisture making the wrinkles look less pronounced. Having a high water water, this ancient plant of southeast Asia has been used fro 12,000 years.
- Eye Drops. Some people use Visine to get the red ot, but it's best to use these drops sparingly. These types of products constrict the blood vessels of the eye and can actually cause bloodshot eyes. An alternative would be an EYE LUBRICATING DROP that soothes the eye.
- Make-Up. After a long night, the key is to keep it simple. There are new moisturizers that reflect light away from the dark areas of the face and eyes and create a sheen that mimics a natural glow. These formulas can be used in place of foundation, or under it. When using foundation it should be light and sheer, and only used where you need to even skin tone.
For dark circles the best formula is one that is a thicker and creamier. Because lack of sleep can deplete the body of moisture, you want to use a formula which doesn't pull at the area and also hydrates the skin. The color should match or be slightly lighter than your skin tone. Skin correctors can also help counterbalance the dark area of the eye.
Again, for eye make-up keep it simple. Your eyes may e red or irritated, so the best colors are those that are neutral brown or black. Plums and mauves on the eye area can highlight the red in your face and eyes. To finish the look, choose a bright red lipstick, or for a more modern look -- a berry stain. It is classic and powerful and doesn't require a lot of effort.
