Day 37: Obama Names Commerce Secretary (Again)

Today, on the thirty-seventh day of his presidency, President Obama named a commerce secretary for the third time. This time he selected former Washington state Gov. Gary Locke.

"I'm sure it's not lost on anyone that we've tried this a couple of times," Mr. Obama said while introducing Locke. "But I'm a big believer in keeping at something until you get it right. And Gary is the right man for this job." (Read more>)

In the afternoon, Mr. Obama met with Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and members of the Senate Banking Committee and the House Financial Services Committee. Following the meeting, he laid out what he called the "core principles" he believes are necessary in reforming financial markets.

"The choice we face is not between some oppressive government-run economy or a chaotic and unforgiving capitalism," the president said. (Read more>)
