David Plouffe: Obama "Delivering on His Promise"

(CBS)
President Obama's campaign manager played down the significance of election results that saw Republicans steal two governorships from his party, and gave a glowing assessment of his boss's performance one year into the job.

"I think generally these elections tend to be overrated in terms of what they mean later," David Plouffe told "The Early Show" of the GOP victories in New Jersey and Virginia.

Plouffe said the White House was pleased to have taken New York's 23rd District in a special election for the House of Representatives, "But I think the results of that are almost less important than the dynamic in the Republican party, which is Palin and Limbaugh and Beck and others out there purging moderate candidates out of the Republican party. And I think the pathway to success is really the middle of the electorate."

The campaign manager appeared on "The Early Show" in part to publicize his new book, "The Audacity to Win," in which he shares intimate details from the campaign trail. Click here for an excerpt.

Plouffe told "Early Show" co-anchor Harry Smith he "couldn't disagree more strongly" with some who have criticized President Obama's for lacking his campaign zeal after winning the White House.

"I think what the president's doing to rebuild the economy at the same time doing the long-term things on health care and energy that will make this country strong for decades to come is both audacious and needed," said Plouffe, "And I think he's delivering on his promise."

CBS News senior White House correspondent Bill Plante reports that Mr. Obama actually made a whopping 500 promises on the campaign trail, many of which have proven difficult to keep.
