Daigle Traded To Rangers

The Tampa Bay Lightning have traded former No. 1 draft pick Alexandre Daigle to the New York Rangers for future considerations.

Daigle, who went unclaimed in last week's waiver draft, had been assigned to the Lightning's AHL affiliate in Providence, R.I., on Friday.

The 6-foot center, drafted first overall by the Ottawa Senators in 1993, had six goals and six assists in 32 games for the Lightning last season after his trade from Philadelphia on Jan. 29.

The Senators had high hopes for Daigle, giving him a $12.5-million, five-year deal at the age of 18. He played parts of five seasons with the Senators before his trade to Philadelphia.

He made the jump to the NHL directly from his junior club, but did not live up to expectations. His best season was 1996-97, when he scored 26 goals for the Senators.

The 24-year-old from Montreal is scheduled to earn $1 million this season.
