Cops: Teen enlisted gang members in attempt to kidnap roommate's baby

(CBS/KCBS/AP) SANTA ANA, Calif. - Police in California have arrested a 17-year-old girl accused of enlisting gang members to help her steal her roommate's baby.

Gladys Remigio, of Santa Ana, was arraigned Friday on multiple felony charges, including attempted kidnapping.

Remigio allegedly enlisted two gang member friends, 19-year-old Robert Rodriguez and 20-year-old Steven Quirino, in the plot, CBS Lost Angeles reports. On Tuesday, Remigio reportedly picked up Rodriguez and Quirino and drove to the home she shared with a woman identified only as "Norma N."

After ransacking the house, Quirino and Rodriguez allegedly ordered the mother into a bedroom and Remigio then took the 15-day-old baby girl. The two men then fled the scene and Norma was able to take her baby back from Remigio before she left the house, investigators said.

What was Remigio's motive? Police say the 17-year-old had told her boyfriend she was pregnant and was trying to cover up the lie, ABC News reports.

"She's engaged to a guy who thinks that she's 8 months pregnant and working in New York City. But she's not pregnant," Santa Ana Police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna reportedly said. "Eight months into this lie, she's living with these people who have a 2-week old baby. So her master plan was to befriend these two hardcore gang members and have them rob the house."

Remigio faces one felony count each of conspiracy to commit a crime, first degree residential robbery, first degree residential burglary and attempted kidnapping with sentencing enhancements for criminal street gang activity. She faces a possible life sentence if convicted.
