Cops: Massachusetts man barricaded in burning home found dead

LEOMINSTER, Mass. -- Police, firefighters and a crisis negotiator responded after a man barricaded himself inside a Massachusetts home Monday and lit it aflame, reports CBS Boston.

When police later entered the home, he was found dead on the first floor, the station reports.

Police went to the home in Leominster earlier in the day to serve the man with a civil commitment warrant, and the man barricaded himself inside rather than surrender, the station reports. Massachusetts State Police said he lit the home on fire shortly after, and firefighters protected by SWAT teams worked to keep it from spreading to other nearby buildings.

Police were responded with guns drawn and a State Police crisis negotiator attempted to communicate with the man. Reporters at the scene said they heard what sounded like gunshots, but it wasn't clear where they were coming from.

The superintendent of Leominster Public Schools sent out a statement saying students were sheltering in place. That shelter-in-place order was lifted around 2 p.m., CBS Boston reports.

Crews were seen leaving the scene just before 3 p.m.

It wasn't immediately clear how the man died.
