Cops: Man returns to rental car to get heroin, gets arrested

NEWARK, N.J. -- A New York City man was arrested after police say he went back to an airport rental car agency to retrieve a bag - a bag full of heroin.

Workers at a Budget Rental Car at Newark Liberty International Airport contacted police last Tuesday after finding a suspicious bag inside a returned vehicle, said Port Authority spokesman Joseph Pentangelo.

Port Authority police say the bag, found under the dashboard, contained 250 packages of heroin labeled "Fat Boy," according to the New York Post.

Police say 30-year-old Carlos Tavarez of the Bronx had rented the vehicle March 30, and later contacted Budget to say he needed to go back and get something, which he allegedly referred to as "children's medicine," the Post reported.

Tavarez was summoned to Newark airport on Wednesday to retrieve his package. Police say he was arrested after confirming the bag was his, and was charged with heroin possession with intent to sell.

Port Authority detectives reportedly found a total of 89 grams of heroin in the bag.

Tavarez is in custody on $150,000 bail.
