Cops: Kidnapped Va. mom found in son’s car trunk
RICHMOND, Va. - A Richmond, Va. man is charged with kidnapping his mother after she was found alive in the trunk of his car last week, reports CBS affiliate WTVR.
Police say Regelio Lopez, 20, abducted his mother in Richmond around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, and he was arrested about five hours later and roughly 380 miles away in Orangeburg, S.C.
Lopez was reportedly spotted by police at a rest stop and a search of his car turned up his mother in the trunk.
The mother's injuries were not life-threatening, reports the station.
The Richmond Times Dispatch reports Lopez admitted to police that he put his mother in the trunk. He reportedly said he intended to drive all the way to Florida.
According to the paper, he told police he stopped in South Carolina to buy some food for his mother but when she tried getting out of the trunk, he punched her in the ribs and chest.
