Cops: Handcuffed woman stole cruiser, drove up to 100 mph
CENTER TOWNSHIP, Pa. - A Pennsylvania woman is accused of stealing a police cruiser while handcuffed, and then leading police on a chase at speeds over 100 miles per hour, reports CBS Pittsburgh.
Police in Center Township, Pa. say the initial pursuit began when 27-year-old Roxanne Rimer pushed over a security guard at Kohl's after allegedly shoplifting from the store. They say she then attempted to flee in a car driven by her grandfather, who was unaware of the theft. The grandfather reportedly refused to drive away and when that happened, Rimer allegedly forced down the accelerator in the car, ultimately sending it over a hillside.
Authorities located the vehicle and that's when they handcuffed Rimer and put her in the back of a police cruiser, according to CBS Pittsburgh. However, it wasn't long before she allegedly managed to slip through the plexiglass divider in the police car while handcuffed.
"With her back turned, and her hands cuffed behind her back, she managed to put it in gear, and drive," Center Township Police Chief Barry Kramer said.
"The part that is a little striking is driving the vehicle with handcuffs behind her back and being able to operate that," Kramer continued, according to the station.
Police say Rimer then led them on a high speed chase.
Officers say she hit two other cars and nearly hit two officers during the chase, reports the station. They eventually backed off for safety reasons.
Police say she Rimer ultimately ditched the police cruiser in Crescent Township and then knocked on a nearby house for help.
Sherry Percivalle answered the door.
"I had no idea. She was just a skinny little girl, and she said she was pregnant and her boyfriend threw her out of the car. What would you do?" Percivalle told the station.
Percivalle's husband agreed to give her a ride home but not before Aliquippa police tracked them down and took Rimer into custody, according to the station.
Rimer was reportedly still in her original handcuffs.
She's facing a long list of charges, including possession of drug paraphernalia. According to CBS Pittsburgh, police say she was found to be in possession of heroin needles.
As Rimer was being led out of the police station, she reportedly said she had no recollection of what happened.
