Cops: Fla. woman lies about carjacking to get attention from boyfriend

(CBS/WKMG) DELTONA, Fla. - Police say that 25-year-old Stacie Zuver lied about getting carjacked and sparked a $4,700, two-dozen-officer police search for the perpetrator, all to get attention from her boyfriend.

The Orlando Sentinel reports that sheriff's spokesman Gary Davidson said Zuver "spun quite a yarn. The story seemed a bit far-fetched." 

Zuver's mother received a distress call from her daughter saying she was in trouble and needed her mom to wire her $20,000, Davidson said. A co-worker who was told of the incident then called police.

CBS affiliate WKMG reports Zuver told police a gunman got into her car and demanded a large sum of money. She first said it had taken place in a shopping plaza in Daytona Beach. Then, she changed her story to say it happened in Port Orange.

She told police the gunman got scared and fled the scene.

More than two dozen officers from four different law enforcement agencies helped search for the mysterious carjacker. The search included launching a helicopter and sending out K-9 patrols.

Investigators continued to interview Zuver about the incident, and eventually noticed inconsistencies in her story, said Davidson.

"First, the location kept changing. The next thing that changed was the reason why she was supposedly in the Port Orange area in the first place," he said.

She told investigators that she worked at Disney World, which was why she was in the area.

Deputies said she later admitted that she hadn't worked at Disney in more than a year, and that she made up the carjacking story to get more attention from her boyfriend.

She was subsequently arrested and faces a charge of knowingly making a false official statement.
