Cops: Calif. woman admitted to fatally stabbing 7-month-old son

LIVERMORE, Calif. - Police say a woman admitted that she stabbed her 7-month-old son to death in a popular Northern California park.

Chief Timothy Anderson of the East Bay Regional Parks District Police Department said Sunday in a statement that the 23-year-old mother from San Jose had a history of depression and appeared to have self-inflicted knife wounds on her wrist.

CBS San Francisco has identified the woman as Ashley Newton. She is being held without bail at the Santa Rita Jail in Alameda County on suspicion of murder.

Police were called Saturday on reports of a damaged Honda sedan in the Del Valle Regional Park east of San Francisco. They found the car abandoned with the engine running and an empty child's seat inside.

Anderson says they were about to tow the car when Newton approached them holding her lifeless baby.

Officers' attempts resuscitate to the baby -- who had suffered multiple stab wounds -- were unsuccessful. CBS San Francisco reports that the child was declared dead at the scene by paramedics. Park police said the woman was arrested after telling officers she had stabbed the baby.

Investigators said they found a knife in the area. Park police told the station that it is believed to be the murder weapon. No motive has been offered at this time.
