Cops: Calif. grandmother beaten with ax handle by grandson

ALTADENA, Calif. -- Investigators say a 23-year-old man is in custody after allegedly beating his 77-year-old grandmother with an ax handle, reports CBS Los Angeles.

Authorities were called to an Altadena address shortly before 8 p.m. Friday, where, according to a Los Angeles Sheriff's Department spokesperson, a woman had called 911 to report that her elderly neighbor was on the front porch of a home -- covered in blood.

Deputies arrived to find that the woman had suffered significant head injuries and stab wounds to her torso.

The victim was then taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries and underwent surgery, the spokesperson told CBS Los Angeles.

Investigators say that the assailant used two weapons in the attack that occurred about 10 miles north of downtown Los Angeles.

"They found a blunt object, which appears to be an ax handle at this time. But the knife which was used in the stabbing has not been located," Lt. Cruz Solis told the station.

Detectives were interviewing the grandson.

The woman was listed as in critical condition on Friday.
