Boy, 14, arrested in vicious beating of 87-year-old woman

HEMET, Calif. - A 14-year-old boy suspected of brutally beating an 87-year-old woman at a senior housing facility has been arrested following a days-long search in California, authorities said.

Officials told CBS Los Angeles two teenage suspects attacked the elderly victim in an apartment at the Camelot Independent Living complex in the Riverside County city of Hemet. Authorities said the suspects tied her up and poured bleach all over her. A 15-year-old was taken into custody April 17, the day of the crime.

The assault occurred during an apparent robbery. Investigators said it appeared the woman was not specifically targeted.

"It's an 87-year-old victim minding her own business in the safety of her own home," police Lt. Dean Evans told the Riverside Press-Enterprise.

A neighbor told CBS Los Angeles that the unidentified woman was put in a medically-induced coma. She remained hospitalized in critical condition on Thursday.

The 14-year-old was arrested in a hotel room at the Pechanga Resort & Casino Thursday evening in Temecula, Calif., according to authorities. Police told the station someone over 18 rented the room for the underage teen.

During the search for the 14-year-old, officers released a flier with his name and photograph. Crimesider is not naming the boy because of his age.

Authorities told the station the teens would likely be charged with attempted murder and assault.

The arrest warrant alleges attempted murder, burglary and torture, Evans told the Press-Enterprise , noting the boy had extensive contacts with police in the past involving curfew issues and crimes.

Police have contacted family members, but would not say whether they have cooperated.
