Cops: 7 Albany students arrested for hazing recruits at unsanctioned sorority
ALBANY, N.Y. -- Albany Police say seven University at Albany students were arrested Thursday morning following a suspected hazing incident at an unsanctioned sorority at an off-campus home, reports CBS affiliate WRGB.
Around 1 a.m., police were called to the home for a loud noise complaint.
Officers saw four people being subjected to what appeared to be a sorority initiation. According to the Albany Times-Union, police say the blindfolded recruits were made to eat mud and then doused in a mixture of rotten eggs, rotten milk and a liquid that smelled like urine.
One of the alleged victims was taken to the hospital after experiencing an allergic reaction, reports the newspaper. She was reportedly treated and released.
The seven people arrested for hazing are 19-year-old Katrina Bergvoy, 19-year-old Heaven Guanco, 19-year-old Monica Vitagliano, 20-year-old of Tereyza Martin, 21-year-old Chinzao Ezekwem and 21-year-old Jessica Raynor.
A University at Albany spokesperson tells WRGB that the sorority was not recognized by the university and the incident occurred off campus. The college is investigating and says that if they find the accused students have violated the college’s code of conduct they will take appropriate measures.
All seven were issued appearance tickets and scheduled to appear in Albany City Criminal Court.
