Cops: 1 killer responsible for Long Island slayings

(CBS/AP) NEW YORK - Police investigating the discoveries of 10 sets of human remains on Long Island have revised their theory in the case, saying they now believe the killings are the work of a single serial killer rather than multiple killers.

Suffolk County Police Commissioner Richard Dormer says in an interview posted on Newsday's website that the fact that all the victims may be linked to the sex trade supports the single-killer theory.

Investigators previously speculated that as many as three killers could be responsible for the deaths.

Between December 2010 and April 2011, the remains of eight women, one man and a female toddler were found strewn along a remote beach parkway and elsewhere. Police have identified only five of the 10 victims. Those five were women working as escorts.

The investigation began as a hunt for missing New Jersey prostitute Shannan Gilbert, last seen a year ago. She hasn't been found. Dormer says detectives don't think her case is connected.
