Convicted Burglar Michael Dupree Sues Man Who Carried Out Citizen's Arrest; Definition of Chutzpah?
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla (CBS/AP) Pay attention - this one doesn't happen every day.
A Florida inmate named Michael Dupree is suing the man he burglarized. Why?
Dupree claims he was mistreated - roughed up - during the citizen's arrest that landed him behind bars.
Dupree is doing 12 years for burglary and cocaine possession, stemming from a 2007 break-in of a van in St. Petersburg. He stole a bicycle locked in the van, and was caught after the owner, Anthony McKoy, saw him with the bike down the street.
The convicted Dupree says McKoy and two others pointed a gun at him, handcuffed him, and placed a knee painfully in his back.
For his pain and suffering, Dupree is seeking $500,000 for disabilities and distress suffered during the take-down.
Dupree filed the civil lawsuit on his own, without the help of an attorney.
After being served with the suit, McKoy said, "I thought it was a joke. I'm the victim."
