Connecticut man accused of stuffing heroin under his kids' bed

DANIELSON, Conn. -- A Connecticut man is accused of selling heroin he hid under a bed where three small children slept, reports CBS affiliate WFSB.

State police said they arrested 27-year-old Zachary Monahan, a convicted felon, on Thursday just before 6 p.m. They said they executed multiple search warrants at his home.

When troopers entered the home, they allegedly found 200 bags of what they believe is heroin, packaged and apparently ready for sale. Police estimate the street value of the drugs at $1,600.

Police said they also found four stolen firearms that were hidden throughout the property. The firearms are allegedly linked to several burglaries in nearby communities.

About $2,000 in cash and a digital scale were also seized.

Monahan was charged with possession of narcotics, operating a drug factory, risk of injury to a minor, receiving stolen property and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Troopers said the children in the home were between 1 and 9 years old. The Connecticut Department of Children and Families responded to the scene and removed the children from the home.

Monahan was held on $125,000 surety bond and is expected to appear in Danielson Superior Court on Friday.
