Dust storm causes deadly pileup on Colo. highway

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- The Colorado State Patrol says two people are dead and several injured after an 11-vehicle pileup in the southeastern part of the state.

Trooper Nate Reid says that a dust storm caused the chain-reaction crash on Highway 287 near the town of Lamar Wednesday evening.

He tells The Associated Press that several people were rushed to hospitals, including some via helicopter, but he didn't have an exact number or detail on the type of injuries.

Reid says the two people who died were in separate vehicles, but no more information about them was available.

Station KRDO-TV reported earlier that the accident happened in the northbound lanes.

Reid says that a vehicle slowed because of the dust, setting off the crash that involved both passenger vehicles and tractor-trailers.

He says lanes going in both directions were shut down for several hours.
