Co-defendant pleads not guilty in Vegas mom slaying case
LAS VEGAS - A co-defendant charged in the killing of a Las Vegas mother of four in a shooting in a residential cul-de-sac got a lawyer and pleaded not guilty.
Attorney Martin Hart declined outside court to talk about the case after 26-year-old Derrick Andrews entered his plea Tuesday to murder, attempted murder, weapon and conspiracy charges.
Police say Andrews drove the getaway car during the Feb. 12 shooting that killed 44-year-old Tammy Meyers.
Nineteen-year-old Erich Milton Nowsch Jr. previously pleaded not guilty to the same charges. Andrews faces the same charges as Nowsch because he's accused of aiding and abetting the crime.
Both Nowsch and Andrews are scheduled to go on trial May 26.
Prosecutors are expected to decide Wednesday whether to seek the death penalty.
Early on, the shooting was characterized as road rage after Meyers' family claimed she and her 15-year-old daughter were followed home after a crash and confrontation. Police later said there was no crash and that Meyers went home after the initial confrontation, picked up her adult son - who was armed - and went looking for the person involved in the confrontation. This resulted in an alleged shootout between Meyers' son and Nowsch.
Tammy Meyers died at a hospital two days later, on Valentine's Day.
Police have said the woman and her killer knew each other prior to the shooting and that they lived in the same neighborhood.
Nowsch's attorneys have said the 19-year-old acted in self-defense.
