(CBS News) The trailer for the highly-anticipated big screen adaptation of David Mitchell's acclaimed best-seller has surfaced online.

The six-minute-long trailer gives audiences a peek at how "The Matrix" siblings Lana and Andy Wachowski and "Run Lola Run's" Tom Tykwer went about bringing the book to life.

In the trailer, stars Tom Hanks and Halle Berry take on multiple roles. The video also shows multiple worlds from the South Pacific in the 19th century to a post-apocalyptic wasteland.

In addition to Hanks and Berry, the film features actors Hugo Weaving, Jim Sturgess and Susan Sarandon.

"Cloud Atlas" is set to be released in the U.S. on Oct. 26. It will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.
