Clintons In NY State Of Mind
President and Mrs. Clinton are continuing a summer sabbatical that has included fun in the sun, house hunting, and fund-raising, reports CBS News Correspondent Diana Olick.
Sunday brought two big-money events in the Hamptons on the eastern end of Long Island, N.Y. There was a luncheon at the home of designer Vera Wang that will aid the first lady's expected Senate campaign. And there was a dinner Sunday night at which rocker Jon Bon Jovi entertained.
Saturday, the Clintons attended three receptions in the Hamptons.
The weekend should net Democrats $2 million, $400 thousand of which goes to Mrs. Clinton's senate exploratory committee. Despite her still-undeclared status, she did everything candidates do: delivering an unscripted stump speech, pressing the flesh, and taking advantage of a not unexpected endorsement.
"The woman I have shared the last, well since we met, 27 years with, is the most passionate, the most committed the most able the most consistent public citizen I have ever known and New York would do well to send her to the United States Senate," said President Clinton.
The fund-raising weekend came after the first family wrapped up a Martha's Vineyard vacation and spent two hours looking at another possible house in Westchester County.
Word spread quickly through the small town of Chappaqua, N.Y., that the first family was in the neighborhood for a little house hunting Saturday.
The Clintons spent more than 90 minutes touring a house referred to by neighbors as "the old house," on Old House Lane. The three-story home on a secluded cul-de-sac has a fireplace, swimming pool, and something the president indicates could be a selling point for the first family -- a large open porch.
Traveling on Air Force One, President Clinton remarked, "[We want] some place nice and airy, that will make Hillary happy."
Asking price is reportedly around $1.5 million, a price in line with the other homes Mrs. Clinton has inspected in Westchester County.
Mr. Clinton joked to the crowd that gathered near the property, "She'll be senator and I'll be first neighbor."
The Clintons will now take their vacation to Lake Skaneatlas, New York. Their first stop will be the state fair. It's not billed as a campaign visit, but fairs are always a favorite for candidates.
