(CBS) Chelsea Handler's much anticipated turn as host of Sunday's MTV Video Music Awards in Los Angeles is getting some mixed reviews.

The taped opening segment with fresh-out-of-rehab Lindsay Lohan got some positive feedback as did her hot tub adventure with the "Jersey Shore" cast.

But many critics thought her jokes fell flat and said they were expecting more from the show's first female host since 1994.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, The New York Times called her the show's "worst host ever" and the Washington Post said her punch lines "felt a few degrees below crass."

On the other hand, Entertainment Weekly complimented her on a "workmanlike " job and The Los Angeles Times called her "a game presence " on the show.
