UPDATED 1:24 p.m. EDT

(CBS/AP) NEW BRITAIN, Conn. - Central Connecticut State University is urging students to remain indoors and away from the windows due to what is reported to be an "active shooter situation," according to CBS afifliate WFSB.

The New Britain university's website urged people Monday to get inside buildings and stay there. School officials reportedly tweeted around noon: "This is not a drill."

University spokesman Mark McLaughlin declined to disclose the nature of the emergency. He says police are urging officials to alert everyone on campus to get inside.

According to WFSB, school officials were updating the university Twitter account and reminding students to stay indoors and away from windows.

"We will communicate when we have more info," officials reportedly tweeted around noon.

A few minutes later, the university tweeted "students please stay inside your buildings until instructed to do otherwise."

New Britain police did not immediately respond to requests for comment and no further details were immediately available.
