Report: Phila. father, daughter arrested in attack on homeless man

PHILADELPHIA - Philadelphia police arrested a well-known Mummer and his daughter in connection with the shooting and beating of a homeless man in the city's Queen Village neighborhood, reports Philly.com.

According to CBS Philly, 62-year old Carmen D'Amato and his daughter, 36-year old Rita D'Amato, turned themselves in to police on Friday, hours after warrants were issued for their arrest.

Philly.com reports Carmen D'Amato is a former captain of the South Philly Vikings - a club that competes in the Mummers Parade, a folk festival held each New Year's Day in Philadelphia.

According to police, the D'Amatos were captured on surveillance video approaching the 36-year-old victim just before 3 a.m. on October 25. They say Rita D'Amato struck the man in the chest with a baseball bat, and then, when the victim ran, Carmen D'Amato fired two shots that struck him in the leg.

The victim suffered a broken leg, reports the station.

Philly.com reports the victim told police the woman said, "You know what you did, you son of a...," before swinging the bat.

A law enforcement source told the site that the D'Amatos believed the victim may have been breaking into cars in the area.

The Philadelphia Police Department confirmed to 48 Hours' Crimesider that they are looking into whether car break-ins in the area are related to this incident.

Both father and daughter are being charged with aggravated assault and related offenses.

According to Philly.com, Carmen D'Amato had his term as captain of the South Philly Vikings cut short in 1988 after he was indicted on charges of conspiracy to manufacture and distribute methamphetamine and defrauding the IRS. He was reportedly acquitted of the drug charge, but was sentenced to four years in prison for tax fraud.
